Junk Journals Workshop 1 of 2 sessions

February 18 @ 1:30 pm - 4:30 pm

Location: Co-Lab
Audience: Adults
Registration required and opens Feb. 1.  http://engagedpatrons.org/EventsExtended.cfm?SiteID=2235&EventID=510068

A junk journal could be described as a combination of altered or created book, serving like a scrapbook, journal, photo album, ephemera keeper. Pretty much anything goes. An example will be available at the reference desk.

The first session, we will create the cover. Participants are encouraged to bring a book they don't mind tearing apart to make into a bigger book. It could have sentimental value, or just any old book.  The library will also have books available. Covers are created repurposing the cover (and/or pages) of a book. OR, the journal can be created from scratch, using sturdy cardboard, fabric, and glue.

The second session we will create signatures, which are groups of pages. The pages are made from scrapbook paper, paper bags, gift bags, greeting cards, envelopes, tissue paper, maps, pages from other books. Again, anything goes. These pages are grouped into signatures, and are either sewn into the created cover, or tied in with a sturdy twine.

Pages are then decorated and pockets created from paper are often added. Envelopes and flaps are also popular. Pages can be decorated with ribbons, fun paper clips, fabric, antique-looking photos or pictures, memorabilia, etc.

People often use a theme, like Disney, or steampunk, or a trip, a hobby, or just stuff they find aesthetically pleasing. Natasha at https://www.youtube.com/c/TreasureBooks has a huge following, and a FB group, and you can get ideas of some journals there.

The library will provide all the materials, but bring along anything special you want to include in your junk journal.
