SUMMARY:Indigenous Book Circle Launch with author\, Eric Steven Zimmer
DESCRIPTION:Join the Meskwaki Cultural Center and Museum\, the Cedar Falls Public Library\, the Hearst Center for the Arts\, and the University of Northern Iowa as we launch a community book circle centering Indigenous culture\, history\, and perspectives. \nThe evening's event will feature a panel discussion with Tieranny Keahna\, Meskwaki Tribal Historic Preservation Officer\, along with author of Red Earth Nation: A History of the Meskwaki Settlement\, Eric Steven Zimmer\, whose book will serve as the foundation for four seasonal community discussions held in Fall 2026\, and Winter\, Spring\, and Summer 2027. This cycle of gatherings gives participants a chance to consider the beginnings of the Meskwaki Settlement\, Cedar Falls\, and UNI\, and to better understand these places as neighbors.  \nEach season will also feature smaller reading circles – to deepen reflection and conversation – for those who wish to explore titles by Indigenous authors of poetry\, fiction\, and non-fiction. These smaller gatherings will be facilitated by community members and UNI faculty\, offered in a variety of schedule options\, and hosted at locations throughout Cedar Falls\, including the Public Library\, the Hearst Center\, and UNI. Upcoming details will be posted and available at the launch. \nWhether you're familiar with Indigenous history and culture or just beginning to explore\, all are welcome.  \nNo registration required for launch event (registration may be required for upcoming Indigenous Book Circle events). This event will be held at the Cedar Falls Community Center\, next door to the library. \nFunded by our collaborators and Friends of the Cedar Falls Public Library.

SUMMARY:There is No Place for Us: A Community Book Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a community-wide discussion of Brian Goldstone’s There Is No Place for Us: Working and Homeless in America\, a powerful work of narrative nonfiction about five families struggling to remain housed while working in a rapidly changing city. The book explores the rise of “working homelessness” and the pressures created by rising rents\, low-wage work\, gentrification\, racialized displacement\, and gaps in housing support.  \nThis program will offer space for community members to discuss the book’s themes and consider how housing insecurity affects families in Iowa and across the United States.  Our conversation\, facilitated by Dr. Allen Hayes\, will address questions of affordability\, employment\, public policy\, and community well-being.  \nA limited supply of books will be available for checkout at the Reference desk (2nd floor).  While familiarity with the book will enrich the discussion\, anyone is welcome to participate.  This program is located in the Meeting Room. \nSponsored by the Friends of the Cedar Falls Public Library
