Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, the location of these programs is subject to change. Masks are always encouraged to be worn, but some events will require masks for all attendees over the age of two. 

Recurring Programs

Tween Time | 2nd & 3rd Wednesdays |  3 p.m.
Come hang out while we talk about cool things and have some fun. Tweens are invited to join on the 2nd and 3rd Wednesday of each month at 3 p.m. For Ages 9-12, Registration Required.

Word Wizards | Last Wednesdays of Each Month | 3:00 p.m.
Word Wizards is a club where kids can get together, learn about creative writing, work on fun writing exercises, discuss what they’re writing (and reading), and be inspired to make writing a habit. The club meets once a month and is geared towards children 2nd grade and up, but anyone who is interested in storytelling can join (it is helpful to be able to independently write in full sentences). Registration Required.

September’s meeting will be outside in-person near the Carnegie Bench, in the event of inclement weather the meeting will be moved to zoom. The format/location of future meetings are TBD.

Back to School Reading Challenge
It’s back to school time! Start the school year right by setting goals and getting organized with our Back to School Reading Challenge. Log your reading and complete activities on Beanstack to earn badges all month long. Read a total of 10 hours to receive a free book! For grades K-6. Register here on Beanstack or register and pickup a paper log at the youth service desk.

Bookworm Reading Challenge
Every bookworm needs their brain food! Feed your mind by tracking the books you read this Fall and earn new badges! Read a total of 10 hours and receive a free book! For ages 0-5. Register here on Beanstack or register and pick up a paper log at the youth service desk.

Storytime at Sunrise Children’s Zoo |August 14 | 1:30 p.m.
Today is the perfect day for a visit to the zoo! Join us at the Sunrise Children’s Zoo on the Cattle Congress grounds for storytime!

Make A Pinecone Friend | August 25th | 4:00 p.m. | Behind the Library by the Carnegie Bench
Join us and Green Iowa as we make fun, pinecone friends! It’ll be a great way to create fall decorations with recycled and repurposed materials! Registration Required.
For Kids 5+

A Taste of Food Around the World
Join us August through September as we try recipes from every continent. This is a fun activity for the whole family to experience. Come by and pick up the recipe of the week as well as a bag of dry ingredients and detailed instructions. Ingredient bags will be limited, and they are going fast! Registration Required.

Storytimes | 10:30 am | River Place Plaza
Join us for Storytime at the River Place Plaza! We’ll be there on Monday for Baby Storytime, Tuesday for Preschool Storytime, and Wednesday for Toddler Storytime. To learn more about Storytime, click here. Storytime will be canceled in the event of rain/bad weather. 

Worm Farmer for a Day
You can be a worm farmer at the library’s very own worm farm! Your household family can sign up for a 30 minute block to feed the worms and learn about the worm farm. If you would like to save your own food scraps to feed you can, otherwise food will be provided. To register, email the youth desk at youth@cedarfallslibrary.org or call the youth desk at 319-859-3282. There are two spots open per week for the month of September. The worm farm has been provided by the Governor’s STEM Advisory Council and the Science Center of Iowa. For families.

Art Step-by-Step with Miss Chelsea |  September 14th | 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm
Join Miss Chelsea as she leads you through how to create a piece of art using paints. This event will be held on Facebook live. All Ages.

Fall StoryWalk® Story: Creepy Carrots by Aaron Reynolds

Nature Walk on the StoryWalk |Thursday, September 30th | 4:30pm | On the Big Wood Lake StoryWalk
Join Miss Katie and our library’s nature expert, Mr. Dan on a nature walk along our Storywalk at Big Woods Lake. Miss Katie will read the storywalk book and Mr. Dan will tell us about the nature around us. How many new things will you see? We will meet at the start of the Storywalk, which is on the paved trail by the Big Woods Lake Campground. This program will take about 1 hour. For Families.

Scavenger Hunt: Back to School Edition
We love Scavenger Hunts, and we know you do too! Come to the library to search for our little, hidden friends. Find all twenty friends for a free book!

3rd and 4th Grade Book Club | September 28 | 4:15 p.m. | Carnegie Bench
Join our virtual book discussion! We’ll go through some questions about this month’s book  Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo. Please register by calling the Youth Desk or dropping by in person. Registration Required.

5th and 6th Grade Book Club | September 27 | 4:15 p.m. |Carnegie Bench
Fifth and sixth graders are invited to join us for a discussion and activity on this month’s book, Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer. We will be meeting behind the library at the Carnegie Bench. Scary Story Contest Workshop | October 5th | 4:00-5:00 p.m.
Get your scary stories ready to submit for our Scary Story Contest! Spend a little time talking with some friends about what you might write about, and get your submission ready to send for judging! Kids of all elementary ages are welcome to participate in the workshop and submit their scary story to our contest. Grades K-6 Registration Required.

Scary Story Contest | October 18
Submit your scariest story to our contest for a chance to win a fabulous prize! Submissions should be 500 words or less and fit an eerie October theme. Prizes will be provided in the K – 3rd Grade category and the 4th – 6th Grade category. Please submit your stories as a PDF to aparsons@cedarfallslibrary.org by 11:59 on October 18th so they can be considered for the contest. Contest winners will be announced Friday, October 29th, and posted on the Library’s social media.

Post-it Note Art Gallery | October 4th-8th
Come to the library and help us create a wall of Post-it Note Art. It’s easy! All you need is a Post-it Note, an art utensil, and a lot of imagination. Materials will be on the table by the youth service desk.

Mad Scientist Lab | Tuesday, October 12th | 6:00 | Co-Lab
Let your inner Mad Scientist out. Join us as we make slime and conduct other crazy experiments. Please dress for mess. Ages 8-11, Registration Required. *Location Subject to Change*

Pumpkin Decorating Contest | October 21st-28th 
Painted, sculpted, bedazzled, wrapped, spooky, silly, frightening, topped with a cap. There are so many different ways to decorate a pumpkin, but which is the best? Register here to participate in our Pumpkin Decorating Contest! We’ll provide the pumpkins, and you’ll provide the creativity and the additional materials needed. Registration is required and opens on September 27th. The contest will have three age groups, each with 15 spots available. **NOTE: In order to keep the library free of pests, we will not accept carved pumpkins as submissions for the contest**

What happens after I register?

  • Pumpkins to decorate can be picked up at the library on October 11th.
  • Decorated pumpkins must be dropped off by October 20th
  • Voting starts in the library on October 21st and goes through October 28th.
  • You can pick up your pumpkin anytime between October 29th and November 3rd.
  • The winner will be announced on Halloween via social media.

If you don’t get a spot, no worries! You still have the power to vote on your favorite pumpkin!

Safe in Space | Saturday, October 23 | 1:00 p.m. | Co-Lab
Cedar Falls’ very own NASA astronaut Raja Chari will be going to the International Space Station very soon! What helps keep astronauts safe as they go into space? One thing is their spacesuits. Come explore engineering design as we learn about spacesuits and do some of our own spacesuit testings. In the Co-Lab. For kids PreK-2nd grade. Registration Required

Spooky Storytime |Tuesday October 26th | 6:00
Does your little ghost or goblin want some chilling fun? Then join us for Spooky Storytime where we’ll sing creepy songs and read scary fun books. Costumes are encouraged.  Registration Required.
Scary Stories | Wednesday October 27th | 6:00
Can you handle scary stories? Join us for a night of gloom and doom as Miss Chelsea reads scary stories not for the faint of heart. Ages 8-11. Registration Required.

Winter StoryWalk® Story: Over and Under the Snow  by Kate Messner

Island of Misfit Toys Warped Workshop| Monday, November 8th | Tweens 6:00-6:45 p.m. & Teens 7:00-7:45 p.m.| Location TBD
You’re invited to attend a warped workshop inspired by the Island of Misfit Toys where we will combine old toys to create new ones. You’ll then have the opportunity to enter your twisted toy creations into a contest where they’ll be on display in the library during the month of December. Prizes will be awarded to the winners of the contest in separate categories for tweens and teens. Fairy Tale Engineering | Saturday, November 13 | 2:00 p.m.-3:15 p.m. | Co-Lab
You know the story of the Three Billy Goats Gruff, but do you have what it takes to design a bridge to support the troll and the biggest goat? Each participant in this challenge will get a bag of the same building materials. You will have 45 minutes to build a bridge that holds the troll and goat. At the end of the time, we will come together to see if the bridge can hold the weight, to discuss what worked and what didn’t work. Location? For kids grades 3-6. Registration Required.

Zine Machine: A DIY Workshop| Thursday 18th at 4 p.m. & Saturday, November 20th at 3 p.m. | Co-Lab
Join us as we explore the creative world of zine-making! We’ll get inspired and work individually or collaboratively to make our very own zines. You’ll have the opportunity to put copies of your zines in the library where people browsing for books can take a look at your creative creations! Geared towards tweens, but fun for the whole family! 10 spots available each session, Registration Required.
